Overview

Arizona State University (ASU) is seeking a Shop Specialist to support the use of its fabrication shop at the Chandler Innovation Center. This role involves training users on specialized equipment while prioritizing safety and customer service.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as subject matter expert on specialty shop equipment.
  • Assist shop users in the safe and effective use of equipment.
  • Supervise use of shop equipment to ensure safe operation.
  • Provide high level of customer service to shop users.
  • Mentor shop space users to assist with fabrication of their projects.
  • Prepare equipment, tools, and supplies for user reservations.
  • Support shop operations including equipment maintenance and cleaning.
  • Instruct and demonstrate skills on a variety of equipment and software.
  • Certify individuals for use of equipment and update user permissions.
  • Support development and implementation of safety policies.
  • Administer shop management software and communicate with users.
  • Troubleshoot and repair equipment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and three years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Proficient knowledge in at least one traditional equipment subject area such as machining, woodworking, metalworking, electronics, or textiles.
  • Proficient knowledge in at least one digital fabrication subject area such as laser cutting, 3D printing, CNC routing, or CNC machining.
  • Experience with classroom or small group instruction.
  • At least one year of experience in customer service, hospitality, or retail.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Additional Information

  • This is a full-time position, 40 work hours per week.
  • Onsite work at the ASU Chandler Innovation Center is required.
  • Flexible working schedule to accommodate scheduled shop use, including evenings and weekends.
