Overview

The Structural Steel Fabricator / Fitter-Welder is responsible for accurately fitting, assembling, and welding structural steel components according to approved shop drawings, specifications, and production requirements. The ideal candidate should have experience in structural steel fabrication and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret structural steel shop drawings, weld symbols, weld maps, and dimensions.
  • Identify and verify materials, piece marks, dimensions, and quantities before fabrication.
  • Lay out, measure, cut, fit, tack, and weld structural steel components.
  • Accurately position and align components using various layout equipment.
  • Make proper weld preparations and ensure components are properly fitted before welding.
  • Perform structural welding using applicable welding processes.
  • Produce welds that meet company quality standards and project specifications.
  • Inspect completed work for proper dimensions, alignment, fit-up, weld quality, and overall workmanship.
  • Make necessary adjustments or corrections to fabricated assemblies.
  • Operate overhead cranes and forklifts when needed.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Follow all company safety policies and OSHA requirements.
  • Properly use required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Communicate with supervisors, foremen, fitters, welders, and other shop personnel regarding job requirements and production issues.
  • Complete assigned work efficiently while maintaining quality and production schedules.
  • Perform other duties related to structural steel fabrication as assigned.

Requirements

  • Previous experience in structural steel fabrication, fitting, or welding.
  • Ability to read and understand structural steel shop drawings.
  • Ability to read weld symbols and fabrication dimensions.
  • Strong understanding of structural steel fit-up and assembly.
  • Ability to accurately measure and lay out steel components.
  • Ability to safely operate fabrication tools and equipment.
  • Basic understanding of material identification and piece-marking systems.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Reliable attendance and dependable work habits.
  • 2+ years of structural steel fabrication experience preferred.
  • Previous experience as a fitter/welder in a structural steel fabrication shop preferred.
  • Welding certifications such as AWS D1.1 or equivalent preferred.
  • Experience fitting beams and other structural steel assemblies preferred.
  • Experience working from detailed structural steel fabrication drawings preferred.
