Overview

A Schuff Steel Production Fitter-Welder utilizes expertise in steel and bridge fabrication to assemble and fit various structural materials for complex projects in the commercial building, bridge, and industrial sectors. This role requires proficiency in welding and knowledge of blueprints and heat reactions of structural metals.

Responsibilities

  • Follows applicable welding procedures (AWS, AISC).
  • Welds on the ground level, above ground and below ground, in any required position.
  • Chips, peens, and grinds material to prepare for welding or finish.
  • Welds structural materials such as plates, sheets, girders, and tanks under close tolerances.
  • Straightens materials by heat or flame.
  • Performs gouging and scarfing as needed.
  • Takes and passes welding test in accordance with AWS D1.1.
  • Receives instructions, prints, sketches, and work orders.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints and plans the fitting operation.
  • Directs and assists in handling and spreading of material according to detail drawings.
  • Lays out work lines or fits up jigs for positioning material when required.
  • Checks, squares, and scribes all detail connections.
  • Ensures work conforms to drawings and notes.
  • Cleans up material by grinding or chipping.
  • Burns and tack welds for assembly purposes.
  • Moves material to and from the work area.
  • Maintains a clean and organized work area.
  • Performs other routine duties per management direction.
  • Adheres to and follows all safety rules and PPE requirements.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • 12 months of stable work experience.
  • Must pass required weld test and fitter test.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating instructions, and blueprints.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide into all units of measure.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions.
  • Cert in AWS D1.1 weld test.
