Overview

The AFC Welder-Fitter/Fabricator position involves joining a team that constructs the outer hull of Virginia and Columbia Class Nuclear Powered Submarines, utilizing both manual and mechanized welding processes along with shipfitting and metal fabrication functions.

Responsibilities

  • Fabricate and weld frames and cylinders for the pressure hull.
  • Use hydraulic fixtures for fabrication tasks.
  • Follow work packages, fixture setup sheets, drawings, ER's, and SSP's to ensure quality.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, welding symbols, and fabrication drawings.
  • Prepare steel surfaces according to drawing specifications.
  • Pass required welding tests to maintain position after training.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent or a minimum of 2 years related technical experience.
  • On-the-job welding experience or formal welding training or EB welding qualifications.
  • Ability to read and interpret welding and shipyard procedures, structural drawings, technical manuals, test documents, and diagrams.
  • Available to work all shifts.
  • Ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and in extreme temperature conditions.
  • Pass a destructive bend weld test and meet minimum visual acceptance requirements.
  • Possess basic hand tools.
  • Ability to operate impact guns and high torque machinery.
  • Basic math skills.
