Job Description

Overview

The primary function of a Tank Barge PIC is to prepare the assigned barges and complete loading and discharging of oil, refined and petrochemical cargoes. The role requires effective communication with dock personnel to ensure safe and proper transfer of products.

Responsibilities

  • Walk 2-3 miles per day.
  • Check the condition of the barges and rigging by walking the tow.
  • Step across, up, down, or over obstacles to gain access to docks.
  • Extend arms fully for throwing and catching lines.
  • Climb a 90-degree vertical ladder 25-30 ft.
  • Lift and carry 60-75 pounds approximately 500 ft.
  • Detect potentially dangerous chemical vapors using sense of smell.
  • Communicate verbally in English and use handheld radios.
  • Read and write in English for communication.
  • Assist with engine and generator room maintenance.

Requirements

  • Tank Barge PIC License is required.
  • Must possess a valid and current merchant mariners document with a Tank Barge PIC endorsement.
  • Must have a current and valid driver's license.
  • Must pass a company-approved test.
  • Must have successfully completed Kirby Corporation's training school for Tank Barge PIC.
  • Must pass certification requirements of 46 CFR Part 197 Subpart C - Benzene.
  • Must satisfy all United States Coast Guard Chemical Drug Testing Programs.
  • Must pass a pulmonary function test with a minimum score of 80%.

Additional Information

  • Works a rotating schedule of 6 days on and 3 days off.
  • Must endure harsh environments including extreme temperatures and long hours during transfers.
