Overview

The Mechanical Design Engineer will be responsible for designing precision sheet metal products using SolidWorks and AutoCAD, creating detailed shop drawings and bills of material for machining and fabrication. This role supports major building and infrastructure projects and is offered by Actalent, a leader in engineering and sciences services.

Responsibilities

  • Design sheet metal products using SolidWorks and AutoCAD within a fabrication/manufacturing environment
  • Read, interpret, and analyze blueprints, architectural drawings, and technical specifications
  • Create and modify shop drawings for CNC-machined and fabricated components
  • Build and maintain accurate bills of material (BOMs) for assemblies and parts
  • Apply GD&T to ensure dimensional accuracy, fit, form, and function
  • Incorporate fabrication requirements such as bend deductions and sheet-metal forming principles
  • Collaborate closely with fabrication and machine shop teams to ensure manufacturability and quality
  • Support large-scale infrastructure and commercial building projects
  • Review and improve existing drawings to support ongoing production needs
  • Contribute to a positive, collaborative engineering culture within a multi-engineer design team

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering
  • 2–3+ years of experience in sheet metal manufacturing or fabrication
  • Hands-on sheet-metal design experience in SolidWorks
  • Hands-on 2D sheet-metal design experience in AutoCAD
  • Strong blueprint and technical drawing interpretation skills
  • Experience creating and modifying shop drawings for machined/fabricated products
  • Working knowledge of GD&T
  • Ability to develop and manage BOMs
  • Understanding of fabrication concepts such as bend deductions and sheet-metal forming
  • Strong mechanical design skills in a production-oriented environment

Additional Information

  • This role is 100% onsite, Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Business-casual environment (polos, slacks).
  • This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Commerce, CA.
