Overview

Burns & McDonnell is an award-winning engineering, architectural, construction, environmental, and consulting services firm that is 100% employee-owned. They are seeking a staff structural design engineer for their Chicago office to work on transportation-related structures.

Responsibilities

  • Work with a multi-discipline team of engineers and technicians in the design and production of drawings for transportation-related structures.
  • Apply strong knowledge of civil and structural engineering/design concepts, principles, practices, codes, and procedures within the transportation industry.
  • Perform design/review of structural calculations from the conceptual phase through design completion.
  • Research and compile project-related data as required by project managers.
  • Perform field inspections or measurements.
  • Attend project meetings.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil/Structural Engineering or related degree from an ABET accredited program.
  • Or Bachelor of Science in Civil/Structural or related Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited program and successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
  • Master of Science degree in Structural Engineering is a plus.
  • Minimum 3 years structural engineering experience in the design of highway structures for IDOT or Illinois Tollway preferred.
  • Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) design experience is a plus.
  • Illinois Professional Engineering (PE) or Structural Engineering License (SE) preferred or ability to obtain.
  • Good understanding of structural design principles or an aptitude to develop.
  • Demonstrate good oral and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Good attention to detail, organization, and critical thinking skills.
  • Knowledge of Computer Aided Design (CAD) software including MicroStation and Open Bridge Modeler.
  • Experience with design software including MDX, LEAP Bridge, AASHTOWare, Midas Civil, or other comparable technical design and modeling software.
  • Proficient in the use of basic computer software (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite).
