Overview

The General Technician Above Ground Apprentice is an entry-level position at Southern Company Gas, responsible for supporting field operations related to natural gas service. The role involves various tasks including meter reading, maintenance activities, and operating equipment while adhering to safety practices.

Responsibilities

  • Efficiently works a route to complete customer and compliance orders.
  • Observes all safety requirements and regulatory guidelines.
  • Captures documentation in the Mobile Data Terminal and recognizes abnormal operating conditions.
  • Assists in connecting and disconnecting gas service.
  • Conducts investigations of high bill complaints and special readings.
  • Performs regular meter inspections and maintenance of gas systems.
  • Responds to customer inquiries and provides assistance.
  • Assists with installation, repair, and maintenance of the distribution system.
  • Operates basic equipment and tools.
  • Ensures truck is stocked with equipment and supplies.
  • Operates Automated Dispatch system for meter reads and service turn-offs.
  • Identifies abnormal operating conditions and takes appropriate actions.
  • Performs simple sniff tests to detect gas leaks.
  • Performs other job-related duties as required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Mechanical aptitude.
  • Basic knowledge and use of hand tools and equipment.
  • Ability to pass basic skills and knowledge assessments.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Field operations experience preferred.
  • Experience with heavy equipment operation preferred.
  • Technical school training and certification preferred.
  • Welding experience or certification preferred.
