Responsibilities

  • Follow all Great Plains and OSHA safety regulations and wear prescribed safety and protective equipment.
  • Obtain specified electrode and insert it into the portable holder or thread consumable electrode wire through the portable welding gun.
  • Connect cables from the welding unit to obtain specified amperage, voltage, slope, and pulse.
  • Start power supply to produce electric current.
  • Strike arc to generate heat to melt and deposit metal from electrode/wire to work piece.
  • Manually guide electrode or gun along weld line to form specified depth of fusion and bead.
  • Weld in flat, horizontal, vertical, or overhead positions.
  • Examine weld for bead size and other specifications.
  • Apply filler rod/wire manually to supply weld metal.
  • Clean or degrease weld joint or work piece.
  • Repair broken or cracked parts and fill holes.
  • Prepare broken parts for welding by grooving or scarfing surfaces.
  • Chip off excess weld, slag, and spatter.
  • Position and clamp work pieces together or assemble them in jig or fixture.
  • Tack assemblies together.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED and one year experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, work orders, and blueprints.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information in a one-on-one situation.
  • Ability to add and subtract in all units of measure.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a supervised welding test.
