Overview

The Surface Welder Technician plays a critical role in ensuring the structural integrity and longevity of metal components through expert welding techniques. This position involves applying specialized welding processes to repair, reinforce, or build up surfaces on various metal parts, often to extend their service life or prepare them for further manufacturing steps.

Responsibilities

  • Perform surface welding tasks using various welding techniques such as TIG, MIG, and stick welding to repair or enhance metal components.
  • Interpret and follow detailed blueprints, welding symbols, and technical specifications to ensure accurate weld placement and quality.
  • Inspect welded surfaces for defects and perform necessary adjustments or repairs to meet quality standards.
  • Maintain welding equipment and ensure all tools are in safe, working condition before and after use.
  • Collaborate with engineers, quality control personnel, and other technicians to troubleshoot welding issues and improve processes.
  • Adhere strictly to safety protocols and industry regulations to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Document welding activities, including materials used, weld parameters, and inspection results for quality assurance purposes.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of a certified welding training program or apprenticeship.
  • Proven experience in surface welding or a related welding discipline.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, welding symbols, and technical drawings.
  • Familiarity with welding safety standards and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements.
  • Certification from the American Welding Society (AWS) or equivalent (preferred).
  • Experience working with a variety of metals including steel, stainless steel, and aluminum (preferred).
  • Knowledge of welding inspection techniques and non-destructive testing methods (preferred).
  • Previous experience in an industrial or manufacturing environment (preferred).
  • Basic computer skills for documentation and reporting purposes (preferred).

What you'll be running

This posting calls for MIG, TIG, and Stick work. MIG (GMAW) feeds a continuous wire electrode through a shielding-gas nozzle. TIG (GTAW) uses a non-consumable tungsten electrode with filler added by hand, giving the operator the most control of any process. It is slow, demanding, and the standard for stainless, aluminum, and anything where the bead has to look as good as it holds.
