Overview

The MTA Metro-North Railroad is seeking an HVAC Technician to service, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and install HVAC systems and related equipment within Grand Central Terminal. This position is part of a dynamic organization that serves millions of customers traveling in and out of New York and Connecticut.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor the status of all HVAC components using computerized building management system.
  • Perform regularly scheduled preventative maintenance on HVAC systems and ductless units.
  • Repair and replace defective equipment and components.
  • Monitor, maintain and repair air handlers, fans and other related HVAC equipment.
  • Test electrical circuits and components for continuity using electrical equipment.
  • Test pipes and connections for leaks using various test equipment and methods.
  • Install, connect and adjust thermostats, humidistats and timers.
  • Connect heating and air conditioning equipment to Freon lines using brazing and flaring methods.
  • Discuss heating or cooling concerns with users to isolate problems.
  • Review prints, wiring schematics and design specifications to ensure proper HVAC installation.
  • Modify existing HVAC systems to improve efficiency.
  • Clean water cooling systems and ice machines to ensure proper functionality.
  • Complete work order logs to track and verify work performed.
  • Read technical documents to troubleshoot system malfunctions.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma, GED, or TASC.
  • Graduation from a Vocational, Technical Training, or Trade school in HVAC and/or refrigeration.
  • Two years of experience installing or repairing HVAC or refrigeration equipment.
  • Universal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Refrigerant Certification.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Reading comprehension ability.
  • Interpersonal skills and customer service orientation.
  • Mechanical aptitude and skilled in exercising independent judgment.
  • Strong electrical background, specifically with direct digital control (DDC) circuitry.
  • Skilled in reading electrical wiring diagrams.
  • Knowledge of HVAC systems and components.
  • Skilled in connecting refrigerant lines using brazing and flaring methods.
  • Ability to evaluate situations to make decisions and work under pressure.

Additional Information

  • Must be respirator qualified or able to become respirator qualified within 30 days of hire/transfer.
  • Must become and maintain roadway worker qualification.
  • Ability to regularly lift/carry/push/pull tools and equipment weighing up to 35 lbs.
  • Works within the limits of Grand Central Terminal and occasionally outside exposed to all weather elements.
  • Must be able to work at heights up to 50 ft. from the ground.
