Overview

LightSpeed Build Technologies is transforming the construction industry with AI-powered robotics, focusing on automated wall panel manufacturing and collaborative construction to tackle the global housing crisis. The Mechanical Engineer will create mechanical designs and engineering documentation for robotic systems, working at the intersection of industrial design, mechanical engineering, and manufacturing.

Responsibilities

  • Define mechanical interface specs for end-of-arm tooling.
  • Build fast mock-ups to check fit, reach, clearance, and camera placement.
  • Take EOAT designs from mock-up to detailed design, build, assembly, and testing.
  • Support procurement and integration of a third-party dexterous robotic hand.
  • Design camera and sensor mounts in partnership with the perception engineer.
  • Design hardware for the teleoperation rig and write bench test plans.
  • Create detailed 3D CAD models and assemblies in Onshape.
  • Develop parametric models for rapid iteration.
  • Produce production-ready engineering drawings with GD&T and material specs.
  • Maintain organized CAD libraries and revision control.
  • Design components optimized for various manufacturing processes.
  • Develop BOMs and assembly instructions.
  • Collaborate with machinists and fabricators on feasibility and cost.
  • Perform FEA and structural analysis on designs.
  • Conduct tolerance stack-up analysis for precision assemblies.
  • Research and specify materials and components.
  • Work with BIM models to understand building requirements.
  • Translate construction specifications into mechanical design requirements.
  • Challenge conventional approaches and generate unconventional concepts.
  • Rapidly prototype and test ideas, treating early failures as learning opportunities.
