Overview

The Diesel Mechanic position involves performing maintenance and repair tasks on diesel engines in motor vehicles and automotive construction equipment. The role requires a combination of technical skills and knowledge of diesel engines, along with the ability to diagnose and repair mechanical issues.

Responsibilities

• Repairs and maintains diesel engines using hand tools and precision measuring instruments.
• Diagnoses trouble, disassembles engines, and examines parts for defects.
• Reconditions and replaces parts such as pistons, bearings, and valves.
• May weld and cut parts using arc welding and flame cutting equipment.
• May repair and maintain gasoline engines.
• May perform various mechanical tasks in the repair of motor vehicles and construction equipment.
• May test drive motor vehicles and construction equipment on public streets.
• Will learn to utilize various electronic and manual recording systems.

Requirements

• Successful completion of one year of training in diesel engine repair at an accredited institution.
• Two years of experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of diesel engines.
• Possession of a valid New Jersey driver's license.
• May require a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and applicable endorsements.
• Certification as an Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technician may be required.
• Completion of a course on Diesel Emission Inspection may be required.
• Certification as a Powered Industrial Truck Operator may be required.
• Certification as an Emissions Repairer Technician may be required.
• Certification as a Motor Vehicle Inspector may be required.
• Alternate Fuel Certification may be required for servicing alternate fuel vehicles.
• ASE Certification in Suspension and Steering may be required.
• ASE Certification in Brake Repairs may be required.
• ASE certifications in Engine Repair A-1 and Engine Performance A-8 may be required.
