Overview

Port Houston is seeking an Apprentice Crane Technician to assist with various job assignments under close supervision, learning the skills and responsibilities necessary for a career as a Crane Technician. The position offers a combination of classroom training and extensive on-the-job experience, emphasizing safety and technical skills.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with and facilitate various job assignments to learn the skills of a Crane Technician.
  • Develop mechanical and electrical skills to determine causes of equipment malfunction.
  • Learn and utilize safety and environmental procedures.
  • Coordinate maintenance activities with Crane Technicians, Mechanics, and Electricians.
  • Assist in the inspection, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of cranes.
  • Study electrical controls and circuits installed on equipment.
  • Support diagnosis of problems using appropriate tools.
  • Assist with installation of electrical controls and circuits.
  • Conduct time-critical repairs and preventative maintenance.
  • Review and interpret factory manuals and blueprints.
  • Work required scheduled and unscheduled overtime as needed.
  • Act in accordance with Port Houston core values.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • Ability to be a self-starter with initiative.
  • Effective communication skills, both orally and in writing.
  • Judgment and quick-thinking skills.
  • Ability to work with written or oral directions.
  • Comfortable climbing and working at heights.
  • Ability to operate a forklift, if needed.
  • Knowledge of safety policies and procedures.
  • Ability to work with others and pay attention to detail.
  • General working knowledge of computers and Microsoft Office software.
  • A current, valid Texas driver's license is required.
  • A Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) must be obtained within 30 days of appointment.

  • The work site location is Bayport Maintenance.
  • The apprenticeship program lasts up to 5 years.
