Overview

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is seeking a QMED Oiler for a temporary position from 10/5/2026 to 11/10/2026. The role involves assisting engineers with the operation, maintenance, and repair of equipment in the engine room.

Responsibilities

• Perform general duties including wiping oil, maintaining tools, and cleaning machinery.
• Lubricate moving parts of propulsion engines and auxiliary equipment.
• Pump bilges and clean strainers, filters, and centrifuges.
• Check the proper operation of machinery during scheduled rounds.
• Assist engineers with maintenance and repair of engine room equipment while in port.
• Keep a log of all watch operations and conditions.
• May stand engine room watch and generator watch in port.
• May be assigned day work and perform other duties as required.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent education and one year sea duty as an Oiler.
• Prefer Oiler experience on a similar vessel.
• Require a U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner's Credential endorsed as a QMED Oiler.
• Familiarity with a variety of engine room equipment and tools.
• Ability to discern and help repair equipment malfunctions.
• Demonstrate good safety practices and procedures.
• Must have all applicable training as required by the Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers.
• Must hold a Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC) and an unexpired Passport.
• Must be able to pass a Pre-employment DOT drug screen.
• Must hold an unexpired USCG medical certificate.

Additional Information

• Hourly rate is $31.83.
• Working at least 8 hours per day, and at times in excess of 12 hours per day, 7 days per week.
• Work at sea for three to five months continuously.
• Live and work in cramped quarters, frequently in bad weather and with violent ship motion.
