Overview

The Regional General Mechanic (Regional GM) is responsible for maintaining and repairing various facilities within a designated region, focusing on building and mechanical trades, particularly carpentry. This role requires advanced knowledge and skills to ensure the functionality and safety of buildings and grounds, responding to emergencies and performing inspections as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Perform major and minor repairs of all building systems from foundation to roof.
  • Maintain and repair special systems such as emergency lighting, fire alarm, and security systems.
  • Maintain and repair mechanical systems including HVAC, plumbing, and emergency generators.
  • Coordinate assignments and planning with facility managers for proper operation and maintenance.
  • Assist building managers in planning, scheduling, and budgeting work.
  • Conduct inspections to determine maintenance needs and recommend repair priorities.
  • Draft proposals, plans, and drawings for projects.
  • Supervise subordinate staff and provide training and mentoring.
  • Perform general grounds maintenance tasks.
  • Utilize computers for various administrative tasks and databases.
  • Travel to other facilities for training and duties as needed.
  • Work overtime, especially during winter months.

Requirements

  • Three years of New York State service in a maintenance or engineering title series allocated to Grade 9 or above, or five years of experience in maintenance work with two years of direct supervision.
  • Completion of a two-year technical school may substitute for one year of experience.
  • Must obtain NYSDOH Approved Backflow Tester Certification within nine months of appointment.
  • Must obtain New York State Code Enforcement Official Certification within nine months of appointment.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age and have a high school diploma or GED.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license in New York State.
  • Must be able to push, pull, lift, and carry heavy objects (50+ lbs).
  • Must have basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to read and write in English.
  • Must maintain a favorable background investigation and appropriate clearance.

Additional Information

  • Position is not in the Classified Service of New York State but is covered under New York State Military Law.
  • Current Start Rate is $59,049 and Job Rate is $71,719.
  • District A receives a Downstate Adjustment of $4,150 annually.
