Job Description

Overview

At Jacobs, we're transforming intangible ideas into innovative solutions as an Intermediate Level Structural Tunnel Engineer. This role involves providing support on critical projects while fostering a culture of continuous learning and inclusion, contributing to the planning, designing, and constructing of tunnels and other underground structures across the US.

Responsibilities

  • Work mostly independently with some support from experienced tunnel-structural engineers.
  • Maintain effective communications with the engineering team and clients.
  • Perform calculations to design excavation support and linings and shoring systems.
  • Prepare design drawings and assist in specifications preparation.
  • Prepare technical reports and presentations to present findings and recommendations.
  • Review contractor construction submittals.
  • Observe and report on construction activities and ground conditions during construction.
  • Perform field investigation as needed by the project.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in structural engineering.
  • Professional Engineer license.
  • 5 to 10 years’ working experience as structural engineer, primarily engaged in structural design activities.
  • Previous structural design experience on tunnels and underground structures is an asset, though not a requirement.
  • Eligible to work in the United States.
  • Hybrid position – minimum 2 days in Jacobs’ office, preferably reporting to either our New York, New Jersey, or Boston office.
  • Skilled in structural analysis and design, including expertise in structural analysis and design software such as SAP2000, STAAD, spColumn.
  • Proficiency in the interpretation and application of ACI-318; AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications; ASCE 7 Minimum Design Loads.
  • Additional experience with AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code; AREMA is preferred.
  • Willingness to perform periodic visits to construction sites after being trained for site-specific safety requirements.
  • CAD skills including AutoCAD, Civil3D, and possibly MicroStation.
  • BIM skills such as Autodesk Revit or Bentley Systems equivalent preferred.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and spoken.
  • Other software skills required include Microsoft Office (particularly MS Word, MS Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Other software skills preferred include ArcGIS, GoogleEarth, Matlab.
