Overview

The Welder position involves operating electric and acetylene welding equipment to repair heavy equipment under general supervision. The role requires skills in welding various metal types and the ability to perform mechanical repairs as needed.

Responsibilities

• Make welding repairs in the field to heavy construction and maintenance equipment.
• Weld metal parts together using gas welding or brazing and various arc welding processes.
• Perform related tasks such as thermal cutting and grinding.
• Fix broken or cracked parts, fill holes, and increase the size of metal parts.
• Position and clamp together components of fabricated metal products preparatory to welding.
• Hammer, chip, and grind work pieces to cut, bend, and straighten metal.
• Preheat work pieces using a hand torch or furnace.
• Position, align, fit, and weld together parts.
• Design and construct templates and fixtures.
• Verify conformance of work pieces to specifications using square, ruler, and measuring tape.
• May make mechanical repairs such as replacing starters or generators.
• May perform preventive maintenance of service truck.

Requirements

• Ability to read and speak the English language sufficiently to converse with the general public and understand highway traffic signs.
• Skill in welding different types of metal of various sizes and thicknesses.
• Thorough familiarity with the use of electric arc and acetylene welding/cutting equipment.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
• Ability to perform assigned duties in all types of weather and other work conditions.

Additional Information

• Must possess certification to meet AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code or AWS D1.5 Bridge Welding Code within the first 90 days of employment.
• Valid driver’s license required.
• Must obtain a valid Class A commercial driver’s license (CDL) with tanker endorsement within 180 calendar days of hire.
• Pre-employment drug/alcohol test required.
