Overview

The Service Mechanic - Level 1 position at Columbia University involves providing maintenance and repair services for equipment and systems at the Manhattanville Campus. The role requires working independently or with minimal supervision to ensure safety, reliability, and efficiency in operations.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to calls related to Plant, HVAC, refrigeration, and mechanical issues.
  • Assist other personnel in completing maintenance and work orders.
  • Maintain, repair, and operate system equipment and auxiliary systems.
  • Perform basic troubleshooting of HVAC, refrigeration, and mechanical equipment.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance tasks on various systems.
  • Provide guidance and training to junior personnel.
  • Replace and align motors, fans, pumps, and bearings.
  • Troubleshoot and repair dampers and actuators.
  • Maintain and repair heat exchangers and perform basic sheet metal repairs.
  • Utilize building management systems for monitoring.
  • Process hot work permits and perform fire watch procedures.
  • Maintain records of labor and materials used during work tasks.
  • Communicate operational deficiencies to supervisors.
  • Work with other disciplines to solve complex problems.
  • Attend departmental trainings and meetings.
  • Perform tasks related to Maintenance Worker Level 2 if required.

Requirements

  • HS diploma or GED.
  • Minimum professional proficiency in English.
  • Preferred: Active Motor Vehicle Class D License.
  • Two years of experience as a Maintenance Worker Level 2 or equivalent.
  • Quick learner with self-motivational skills.
  • Ability to discern colors for monitoring alarms.
  • Strong team mentality and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of general OSHA standards and requirements.
  • Certificates of Fitness for various operations as required.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds independently.
  • Ability to work in environments with pathogens and chemicals.
