Overview

The U.C.&M Apprentice position at NY State Electric & Gas Corp involves performing construction and maintenance work under supervision, with opportunities to develop skills necessary for advancement. The role requires physical endurance and a willingness to work in various weather conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Perform less complicated construction and maintenance work on dead conductors, structures, and equipment under directive supervision.
  • Assist 1st Class and 2nd Class U.C.&M Men in more involved work.
  • Acquire pole climbing skills necessary for U.C.&M work.
  • Work on energized conductors, structures, and equipment not exceeding 600 volts under close supervision.
  • Drive trucks and operate winches as required.
  • Clean parts, oil, tape, solder, and perform minor servicing of electrical equipment.
  • Install simple power and lighting circuits, and manage electric meters and services.
  • Perform other related or less skilled work as directed.
  • Acquire knowledge and skills necessary for advancement to U.C.&M. Man 2nd Class.

Requirements

  • At least one year's experience as Laborer 1/c in the Maintenance Department or its equivalent.
  • Ability to learn the work of the Maintenance Department as indicated by an appropriate test.
  • Ability to perform semi-routine operations of moderate complexity and variety.
  • Equivalent to four years of high school or two years of high school plus two years' apprenticeship or trade school training.
  • Must qualify for an automobile operator's license.
  • Normal health, physique, and use of senses as indicated by passing a required physical examination.
  • Strength and endurance adequate for arduous labor in all kinds of outdoor weather conditions.
  • Temperament suited to jobs requiring manual dexterity, precision, and patience.
  • Willingness to work extra and/or irregular hours and under unusual or special working conditions.
