Overview

The Level A Automotive Technician is responsible for advanced diagnostics, complex repairs, and maintenance of domestic makes and models. This position also performs welding and fabrication related to authorized automotive repairs, working independently while supporting less-experienced technicians to ensure repairs meet quality, safety, and reliability standards.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and repair complex vehicle concerns, identifying root causes and verifying repairs.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and major mechanical repairs according to manufacturer procedures.
  • Complete authorized welding and fabrication on exhaust systems, brackets, and other approved repair components.
  • Follow manufacturer repair restrictions and refer work beyond available training or equipment capabilities to the Service Manager.
  • Inspect vehicles and communicate required repairs and recommendations to service advisors.
  • Accurately document diagnostic findings, repairs performed, parts used, and labor.
  • Perform quality-control checks and authorized road tests.
  • Assist less-experienced technicians with diagnostics and proper repair procedures.
  • Maintain an organized work area and stay current on manufacturer bulletins and repair updates.

Requirements

  • Advanced knowledge of engines, transmissions, drivetrains, brakes, steering, suspension, HVAC, and electrical systems.
  • Strong diagnostic skills, including troubleshooting complex mechanical, electrical, and driveability concerns.
  • Proficiency with scan tools, multimeters, wiring diagrams, and manufacturer service information.
  • Hands-on welding experience, including MIG welding, metal preparation, cutting, grinding, and basic fabrication.
  • Ability to select appropriate welding techniques and inspect completed welds for quality.
  • Ability to complete complex repairs accurately with minimal supervision.
  • Strong communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency with electronic repair orders and diagnostic software.
  • Five or more years of automotive repair experience preferred, with demonstrated advanced diagnostic and repair capability.
  • Prior welding experience required; automotive welding and fabrication experience preferred.
  • ASE certification preferred; ASE Master Automobile Technician certification strongly preferred.
  • OEM-specific and ADAS certifications preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Commitment to safety, quality workmanship, and continuous learning.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform essential duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods, bend, kneel, reach overhead, and work in confined spaces.
  • Ability to perform the precise hand movements required for diagnostics, repairs, and welding.
