Overview

The Senior Mechanical Estimator is responsible for developing project cost estimates for mechanical trades, including equipment, structural steel installation, piping, and ductwork, to support EPC and Bid-build projects. This role requires a thorough knowledge of project scope, quantity take-offs, and the ability to present estimates to senior management.

Responsibilities

• Understand the operating processes at facilities being estimated, such as refineries and power plants.
• Prepare conceptual and definitive cost estimates.
• Read and take off all types of construction drawings into standard commodities.
• Navigate 3D models in programs such as Navisworks and Smart Plant.
• Accurately discern take-off elements and assign them to the appropriate database items.
• Identify deficiencies in drawings and define estimated scope through clarifications.
• Develop quantity-based estimates from partial information.
• Understand the sequence of setting large equipment.
• Monitor and coordinate project scope with electrical and civil disciplines.
• Ensure estimates allow take-offs and pricing to be traced back to defining documents.
• Prepare bridging documents to demonstrate understanding of historical cost changes.
• Participate in constructability reviews and cost-saving discussions.
• Organize estimates to meet project needs and adjust takeoffs for estimate summaries.
• Estimate requirements for craft support labor and construction equipment.
• Develop preliminary lifting plans and select appropriate cranes.
• Assist in the development of execution plans and resource-loaded schedules.
• Understand project cash flow principles.
• Develop risk ranging analysis for project elements.
• Solicit subcontract and vendor pricing.
• Prepare formal bid evaluations for management reviews.
• Prioritize and work on multiple projects independently.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent combination of education/experience.
• 7+ years of appropriate field and/or office experience with a minimum of 4 years as an estimator or field engineer.
• Strong background in piping estimating is a plus.
• Ability to visualize the finished product from drawings.
• Good basic mathematical comprehension.
• Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Solid technical skills with an understanding of various classifications of estimates.
• Self-motivated and enthusiastic collaborator.
• Solid computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
• Familiarity with Sage estimating, Accubid, and project scheduling software is an advantage.
• This position may require occasional travel and extended workdays.
